“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy”

This weekend marked the start of La Temporada – The Season. I saw so many families headed for their summer homes. Mom driving the car overflowing with kids, the dog, beach toys, hammocks and the meal everyone will tuck into once they get all the stuff into the house. Dad’s leading the rented truck full of fans, beds, a fridge, TV and DVD… Some of the beach town residents get snarky with the summer people, but hey –  everyone owns the  beach, right?

In colder climes too; after all those dreary months the lure of the ocean or lake is a siren’s song.  And speaking of songs… Don’t we all have our favorite beach music?

This evening, I got thinking about those great songs and I decided to list my favorite ten. It was not an easy task… but here they are (by no means in order of most favorite to least)

Summer in the City – The Lovin’ Spoonful (I love Joe Cocker’s version too)

In the Summer Time – Mungo Jerry (Who can feel unhappy after hearing this one)

School’s Out – Alice Cooper (My brothers played this so much, it grew on me)

Surfin’ USA – The Beach Boys (A few years ago I visited the southern California beaches and watched the surfers… no wonder so many songs were written about those guys)

Wipeout – The Safaris (Such a great song)

California Girls – The Beach Boys (Didn’t all 60s girls want to look like one of these mythic blondes?)

Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay – Otis Redding (Incredibly mellow)

Margaritaville – Jimmy Buffett (There’s no better México beach song)

Saturday in the Park – Chicago (Epic!)

Summertime – George Gershwin didn’t know Janis Joplin would come along and sing his song, but if he could have heard her, he’d realize that he wrote it for her)

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high
Oh! Your Daddy’s rich and your Ma is good lookin’
So, hush little baby, don’t you cry . . .

Do you have a favorite or two to add to the list?

  1. There’s a flip-side benefit as well, Joanna. Those of us who are not too “beach-prone”, and choose to remain in Mérida, have less traffic, and less noise.

I love your song listing. I especially agree with “Summertime,” “Wipeout” and Otis Redding’s ,” Dock of the Bay.”

I wonder if “Gozar La Vida” by Julio Iglesias would fit in with a beach-life list? Haven’t yet fully mastered the translation, but maybe it would.

Or Harry Belafonte’s “Island in the Sun?” or “Oh, Lord what a Morning.”

And I just found “Ven” by Sin Bandera! Sure, it’s for lovers, but does have some “let’s go to the beach” refrains.

Thanks for a fun post. I love any excuse to peruse “mi música.”
